According to the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) there are 106,131. men, women and children on a transplant waiting list in the United States. 17 people die each day waiting for a transplant and every nine minutes another person is added to a transplant waiting list. Kidneys are the highest need and those in need vastly out number the donors. Many Americans are not organ donors. Only ~ 50% of Pennsylvania residents are organ donors. When surveying people who are not organ donors, a myriad of responses arise ranging from
Our mission is to promote Designated Organ Donations in the U.S., and to offer, at no cost, to those on a transplant waiting list, a way of recruiting people, family and friends to designate them as a recipient of the needed organ upon the donor's death.
One action we've taken thus far, is the creation of a driver's license sized card that meet the criteria required in Pennsylvania Title 20, Chapter 86, Subchapter B "Express Anatomical Gifts" and the Uniform Anatomical Guft Act (UAGA). The donor, the donee and two witnesses fill out and sign the card. The donor then carries the card in his or her wallet with their driver's license. Note that if the organ is not a match to the designated recipient it goes to someone on the transplant waiting list.
This method gives the person on a transplant waiting list a way to promote organ donations to their family and friends to become deceased organ donors. This gives the donor control as to who gets their organ first. We hope this method nudges the donor to offer the remaining organs to those on a transplant waiting list.
